New Member of the Curatorial Department
The ANS is delighted to welcome Vivek Gupta to the Curatorial department, where he will work on the collection of Islamic and South Asian coins. Vivek holds graduate degrees (M.A. and M.Phil.) from the Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies, and, Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. Previously, he held positions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Department of Islamic Art), the Freer|Sackler Galleries, and the Jaipur City Palace Museum. His research has been supported by fellowships from the Social Sciences Research Council, Smithsonian Institution, and the U.S. State Department. He also received a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship for India.

 

Archer M. Huntington Award and Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture
 Dr. Michael Alram received the 2016 Archer M. Huntington Award for his outstanding career contributions to numismatic scholarship from the ANS on June 7. A distinguished scholar, researcher, scientist and teacher, Dr. Alram is the 95th recipient of this award, and presented “Money and Power in Ancient Bactria,” as his Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture. Infrastructure Presentation

Continuing efforts to build a sophisticated and interlinked numismatic research system, ANS Director of Data Science Ethan Gruber’s presentation from the Computer Applications in Archaeology (March 2016, Oslo) has been published on YouTube. The presentation, “Linked Open Data for Numismatic Library, Archives, and Museum Integration,”discusses recent advances in linking our archival materials, digital library, and collection together into a more cohesive framework for numismatic research. The paper will be available in the fall.

 

Summer Seminar 2016

The annual influx of graduate students filing through the headquarters of the ANS has begun! For the 62nd year, the Eric P. Newman Graduate Seminar in Numismatics offers a unique opportunity for hands-on experiences with our collections, interactive lessons, and guest lecturers. This year, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Klaus Vondrovec, Curator of Ancient Coins at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, as our Visiting Scholar, who will guide students through the methods, theories and history of numismatics over an eight-week time period. Our eight students hail from the University of Oregon, Brown University, University of Texas – Austin, University of Pennsylvania, Berkeley, ISAW/NYU, Columbia, and Freie University – Berlin. The coin boot camp schedule is available to view – see what the students are learning!

New Video – Coins of the Jewish War

David Hendin, Adjunct Curator for the ANS, discusses coins minted during the Jewish War in a new video for the Ancient Jew Review. Watch the informative video for a brief history and to view some coins from the time period.

RECENT EVENTS

Humanities Open Book Project Meeting

Andrew Reinhard, ANS Director of Publications, attended the annual meeting of the American Association of University Presses on June 17, where he presented the ANS’s work-to-date on the Humanities Open Book project, a joint NEH/Mellon Foundation grant program to convert out-of-print books into EPUB e-books. The additional nine presses who received grants this year also presented their progress over the past six months. By the end of 2016, the ANS will have converted over 80 of its legacy monographs into EPUB3 ebooks (as well as other formats), to facilitate its mission of knowledge-sharing, Open Access, and linked open data. The ebooks will be hosted concurrently on the ANS’s Digital Library platform, and on the HathiTrust.org website.
