Change of Leadership at the ANS

The American Numismatic Society has announced that Gilles Bransbourg will be stepping down from his position as Executive Director in September 2024. Dr. Bransbourg has received an eight-month fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, where he will be working on his book Roman Imperial Economics. Upon his return to the ANS in April 2025, Bransbourg will become a Research Curator. Ute Wartenberg Kagan, currently President of the ANS, has agreed to take over the position of Executive Director, which she previously held from 1999-2019. The ANS Board of Trustees considered it important to ensure continuity while the Society is engaged in locating a new headquarters. More.

Local Coinages in a Roman World, Second Century BC–First Century AD: A Catalogue of the Richard B. Witschonke Collection of Coins in the Early Roman Provinces by Lucia Carbone (ANS Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Numismatics) is the historical and numismatic prologue to the study of Roman provincial coinage. 2023 Huntington Award to Ruth Pliego

The Trustees of the American Numismatic Society have named Ruth Pliego as the recipient of the 2023 Archer M. Huntington Medal Award for Excellence in Numismatic Scholarship. The award will be presented on June 13, 2024 at the ANS headquarters, followed by the Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture by the honoree: “Archer M. Huntington and the Visigothic Coins: Revisiting the La Capilla Hoard.” More.

Medieval Money, Merchants, and Morality at the Morgan Closing on March 10

Medieval Money, Merchants, and Morality, currently on display at the Morgan Library & Museum, features sixteen objects from the ANS collection. The exhibition charts the economic revolution that took place at the end of the Middle Ages and the early Renaissance Trade, at a time when banks were established at an unprecedented scale and coinage proliferated like never before. David Yoon (ANS Mark Salton Curator of Medieval, Renaissance, and Early European Numismatics) served as a consultant and contributed to the exhibition volume. The Met’s Africa & Byzantium Moving to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Opening April 14

At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Africa & Byzantium sheds new light on the staggering artistic achievements of medieval Africa, showcasing its cultural and economic impact on the Byzantine Empire. The exhibition will close on March 3, and will reopen at the Cleveland Museum of Art on April 14. Learn more about the exhibition and see a highlight of the ANS coins on loan

The EPNNES is now Accepting Applications for Newman Grants

The Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Newman Grant program. Newman Grants are designed to financially assist numismatic authors and organizations pursuing original research in American numismatics. The application deadline is April 15, 2024, with the grant awards to be announced on May 25, 2024, coincident with the late Eric P. Newman’s birthday. More.

Long Table Lectures this March

Lucia Carbone (ANS Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Numismatics) returns for the second part of her delve into the Richard B. Witschonke collection, this time focusing on the coinage issued in the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Annalisa Polosa (Sapienza Università di Roma) will present coin finds from Elaiussa Sebaste—an active mint from at least the beginning of the first century BCE to the middle of the third century CE. ANS Member John Janeczek will discuss the Royal Maundy and its specially minted coins. More.

[Club 150] NYC: Monetary Pasts and Futures Panel

On February 7, Gilles Bransbourg, ANS Executive Director, joined Clarisse Hagège (CEO and Founder at Dfns) and Thomas Sullivan (Managing Director at Societe Generale-Forge) for a panel discussion on monetary pasts and futures, hosted by the Sciences Po American Foundation at Societe Generale. More.

School Visits at the ANS

Lucia Carbone, ANS Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Numismatics, hosted a group of first-grade students from Avenues New York and taught them about the origins of money. Jesse Kraft, ANS Resolute Americana Assistant Curator of American Numismatics, welcomed a group of jewelry design students from Pratt Institute to showcase the ANS’s collection of modern medallic art, in preparation for the medal design contest for the Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award.

Lucia Carbone delivers lecture at Nightingale-Bamford School

On February 29, Lucia Carbone, ANS Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Numismatics, was invited to deliver the Annual Bennett Lecture at the Nightingale-Bamford School. Dr. Carbone delivered a talk titled “Women and Power in the Late Roman Republic,” focussing on the political role played by women of the likes of Fulvia, Octavia and Livia in the last decades of the Roman Republic by comparing literary, epigraphical and numismatic sources.

Nathan T. Elkins (ANS Deputy Director) lectured on The Imperial Coinage of Nerva, Part 1: Nerva as Supreme Military CommanderJeff Shevlin discussed his recently published book on “So-Called Dollars.” John Tatman returned for his rescheduled talk about Cretan drachms that were overstruck on Kyrenaika coins. Lavinia Sole, Numismatic Researcher at the University of Palermo, presented NUMMI DIGITALI—a new project aiming to enhance the numismatic collection of the Museum “A.
