China employed international silver coins for their economy from the 1500s into the 20th century. Starting in the late 18th century, most were Spanish and Mexican dollars. However, U.S. silver coins were also included in the China trade beginning in 1794. Journalist and historian Eric Brothers will discuss silver coins used in the Celestial Empire, as well as the fascinating practice of chopmarking coins.
