Long Table 81. Using Coins Outside the Marketplace: Roman coins from Sardis, Turkey

Long Table 81.
Using Coins Outside the Marketplace: Roman coins from Sardis, Turkey

Friday, February 18
1:00 pm ET

Join Jane DeRose Evans, Chair and Professor of Art History at Temple University, ANS Summer Seminar Alumna and ANS Fellow for this week’s Long Table. Evans is a field archaeologist and a numismatist, and when she comes to study coins from a site, she is immediately asked to date the strata using the coins. But the coins can tell us so much more about human behavior (and are not particularly helpful in dating strata). Evans will show you imperial Roman deposits from Sardis which help illuminate how people used coins outside the marketplace – as a way of asking for protection from deities, easing a loved one’s passage to the Underworld, or manipulated to be a gift for the gods that priests could not reclaim.

ANS Members only. A link will be sent to members the day of the event.
