A new economy emerged in the early 2000s with the growth of non-physical, digital assets and commodities paid for by consumers with actual money. In the 2010s this “skin trade” became a multimillion industry with its own black market driven by the market’s desire for rare and unique items found within popular online video games. 2022 ushered in the era of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrency games, further blurring the boundary between the physical and digital worlds, seamlessly enabling the exchange of billions of dollars of digital goods that reside in the Cloud for a limited time. ANS Director of publications Andrew Reinhard will explore the new digital economy based on interactive entertainment, which is no longer child’s play.
