Long Table 126. The Lost Splendor of the Empire: The Roman Gold Coin Finds from Eastern Europe

Friday, February 17, 2023
1:00 PM ET

Join Dr. Kyrylo Myzgin of the Faculty of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw (Warsaw, Poland) and the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology (Schleswig, Germany) for this Friday’s Long Table on Roman gold coin finds from Eastern Europe. There are many Roman coins found in this region, especially in the Ukraine, and, in particular, of Roman gold. In some cases, analysis of these finds radically changes ideas about the history of Eastern Europe in the mid-first millennium CE. Dr. Myzgin’s lecture will review the victories, defeats, ancient diplomacy, and the “lost splendor” of the Roman Empire as exemplified by these discoveries.
