Hahlo-87, Football medal

American Numismatic Society, 1894.59.2.

87. Football medal, cut directly on the steel die.

This medal is tiny (35mm) and being cut directly into the die means that it was engraved at actual size which is clearly a source of pride for the artist, given the level of detail. It takes its design from a popular circulating print by William Heysham Overend (1851-1898) and Lionel Percy Smythe (1839-1918) which depicts a famous rugby match between England and Scotland. Struck in 1894, the year Brenner joined the American Numismatic Society, it was also one of his first gifts to the organization.
