85. Mr. Vadé, Paris, painter. Medallion.

This medallion has no signature or inscription but the mysterious sitter is identified as Vadé (sometimes Vadi) in several exhibition catalogues and reviews. An early Paris work, dated to 1899 in the 1910 catalogue for the International Exhibition of Contemporary Medals, the work is frequently remarked on by reviewers and critics for its astonishingly low relief. It is one of the three medallic works specifically praised by the New York Times in its review of this exhibition.
