Hahlo-79, Senator Chauncey Depew medal

American Numismatic Society, 1896.27.4.

79. Reverse of the Senator Depew medal.

Chauncey Depew (1834-1928) was a famous orator who twice represented New York in the U.S. Senate and was also president of the New York Central Railroad system. For these reasons he is well represented by Polyhymnia, the muse of eloquence and Mercury in his role as god of eloquence, commerce, and financial gain. Brenner also chose Mercury to represent commerce on the reverse of the Prince Henry of Prussia medal (see #47).
