Hahlo-20-30, The Walters Collection Bookplates

Private Collection

20. Insert for catalogue binding, Walter’s [sic] collection.

30. Insert for catalogue binding, of the Walter’s [sic] China collection.

Often referred to as inserts for bookbinding for the Walters’ Chinese porcelain collection these were actually designed for a catalogue of French paintings called Notes: Critical and Biographical—Collection of W.T. Walters which has autographed letters from the artists tipped in. The decorative medallions of a Daoist Goddess and Peonies and Cherry Branches are copied from plates in the ten-volume porcelain catalogue and silver versions adorn the back cover of Notes. The front cover incorporates a double portrait of William and Henry Walters (see #118).
