Hahlo-144, Shepherdess plaque

American Numismatic Society, 1987.147.142.

144. Shepherdess.

Brenner showed the Shepherdess several times during his career and he may have carved an ivory reduction of it (see #117) to make a jewelry gift for Ann Reed (1883-1952), whom he married in 1913. In the catalogue for the 1910 International Exhibition of Contemporary Medals, this is said to date from 1907. The New York Times report of their marriage says they met in 1911—yet on June 21, 1907, George A. Lucas wrote in his Paris diary: “Carte postale St. George & Dragon to Brenner – Thanks for plaque – Felicitations on his wedding – Sure he had got a prize & compliments to Miss x x x”
