Hahlo-110-113, James McNeill Whistler plaquette

American Numismatic Society, 1940.100.32.

110. Reverse of the Whistler plaquette.

113. Whistler plaquette, commemorating his first collective exhibit in London, England.

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), as famous for his art as for his grievance-filled 1890 autobiography, The Gentle Art of Making Enemies, is beautifully satirized by Brenner’s plaquette. It was struck in 1905 as a commemorative for the memorial exhibitions held in Boston, London, and Paris. Modeled in Paris like the John Paul Jones (see #s 102 and 106) it too was created with the assistance of the collection and critique of George A. Lucas (see #s 93 and 121) who had known Whistler well and despite an early friendship, disliked him intensely.
