History of Money and Numismatics Congress

From April 1–4, the Third International Congress on the History of Money and Numismatics in the Mediterranean World, organized by Koç University Suna & İnan Kıraç Mediterranean Research Center on Mediterranean Civilizations, will be held in Antalya, Turkey. The ANS will be represented by ANS President Ute Wartenberg, ANS Second Vice President Andrew Burnett, and Chief Curator Peter van Alfen. Dr. Wartenberg will present “The Coinage of Idyma in Caria—A Re-assessment,” Dr. Burnett will present “The Imperial Currency System of Lycia,” and Dr. van Alfen will present “Mechanisms for Overvaluation in Archaic Greek Coinages: Problems of Convenience, Coercion, and Trust.” The public may register to view the presentations online. David Yoon at the Society for American Archaeology Conference

David Yoon (ANS Mark Salton Curator of Medieval, Renaissance, and Early European Numismatics) will present at the Society for American Archaeology conference in New Orleans on Friday, April 19. His paper is entitled “Distance and Power in Early Medieval Coinage in Spain.” More.

Dr. Wartenberg in Athens

ANS President Ute Wartenberg is currently on a research trip in Athens, Greece, for her work on numerous projects. One project deals with the question of how the date of 480 BCE, the end of the Persian wars, has affected the dating of hoards and Archaic coinages. With her colleagues at the Numismatic Museum in Athens, she continues to work on her catalog of electrum coins in this collection. Finally, Dr. Wartenberg will travel to Antalya to work on Archaic and Classical excavation coins of Patara, a joint project with ANS Trustee Jonathan Kagan.

The EPNNES is now Accepting Applications for Newman Grants

The Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Newman Grant program. Newman Grants are designed to financially assist numismatic authors and organizations pursuing original research in American numismatics. The application deadline is April 15, 2024, with the grant awards to be announced on May 25, 2024, which coincides with the late Eric P. Newman’s birthday. More.

Long Table Lectures this April

ANS Deputy Director Nathan Elkins will present the second part of his talk on Nerva, focusing on types that referred to constituencies in the city of Rome and Italy. Elizabeth Hahn Benge, collection manager for Arts of Africa and Arts of the Ancient Mediterranean and Byzantium at the Art Institute of Chicago, will speak on the most widespread, long-lasting, and versatile currencies in world history: the cowrie shell. Selene E. Psoma (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) will return for the second half of her talk on nomos and nomisma. Pere Pau Ripollès, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Valencia, will speak about the civic coinage of Hispania and its use in daily life. More.

March in Review

Sage Tour at the Met

On March 1, members of the Augustus B. Sage Society gathered for an exclusive tour of Africa & Byzantium at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, led by the exhibit’s curator Andrea Myers Achi (Mary and Michael Jaharis Associate Curator of Byzantine Art) and joined by ANS Chief Curator Peter van Alfen, Executive Director Gilles Bransbourg, and Deputy Director Nathan Elkins. The ANS has several objects on loan for the exhibit, along with the hundreds of other items on permanent display at the Met.

Academy for Teachers at the ANS

The ANS welcomed a group from the Academy for Teachers on March 12 for a session hosted by Lucia Carbone (ANS Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Numismatics) on the origins of money. The Academy for Teachers is a non-profit organization that supports teachers through world-class learning experiences, such as this program at the ANS. 

Dr. Elkins presents in Munich

From March 13-15, ANS Deputy Director Nathan Elkins participated in the workshop Von der Erwartung zur Akzeptanz: Die Reversbilder der römischen Reichsprägung zu Herrschaftsbeginn (From Expectation to Acceptance: Reverse Images on Roman Imperial Coins at the Beginning of Reigns) at the Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts in Munich, organized by Dr. Simone Killen. Dr. Elkins’ presentation was entitled “Expectation and Adjustment: Coins from Nerva’s Accession Issue.”

March Long Table Lectures

Lucia Carbone (ANS Andrew M. Burnett Associate Curator of Roman Numismatics) returned for the second part of her dive into the Richard B. Witschonke collection, this time focusing on the coinage issued in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. Annalisa Polosa (Sapienza Università di Roma) presented coin finds from Elaiussa Sebaste, an active mint from at least the beginning of the first century BCE to the middle of the third century CE. ANS Member John Janeczek discussed the Royal Maundy and its specially minted coins. Selene E. Psoma (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens) spoke on the direct relationship between money and the governing bodies who issued it in ancient Greece. Watch recorded lectures on the ANS YouTube Channel.
