Mark M. Salton Memorial Lecture
This Thursday, 27 October 2016 at 6:00 pm, Dr. Andrew Burnett, ANS Trustee and former Deputy Director at The British Museum, will present “Roman Coins, Money and Elizabethan Society: an Unknown Work by Sir Thomas Smith,” as the 2016 Mark M. Salton Memorial Lecture. The lecture will take place at the ANS headquarters in New York City. A reception will begin at 5:30 pm. Sage Society Trip to Poland
Members of the Augustus B. Sage Society spent an exceptional week on a numismatic tour of Poland, viewing a wide variety of treasures, scenery and landscapes in Warsaw, Cracow and Wroclaw. Events included private museum and numismatic cabinet tours as well as dinners with distinguished numismatic scholars. This was the eighth Sage Society Trip led by ANS Executive Director Dr. Ute Wartenberg Kagan. Look for more information and photos from the excursion in the upcoming issue of the ANS Magazine.

New Publication
Frédérique Duyrat’s Wealth and Warfare: The Archaeology of Money in Ancient Syria will be in print and available to ship on or before November 15th. This book assembles, for the first time, the evidence for coin finds in the region of ancient Syria from the 5th to the 1st century BCE. NJ Numismatic Society Presentation
The ANS would like to thank the New Jersey Numismatic Society (NJNS), who welcomed David Hill, ANS Frances D. Campbell Librarian, to its September meeting. Held at the Madison, NJ Public Library with a large and lively group in attendance, Mr. Hill presented on the history of the ANS, followed by a Q&A session. Special thanks to: David Bailey, President of the NJNS, for his instrumental involvement; Jeff Burke, who submitted an article regarding the event to The E-Sylum, and to Wayne Homren for publishing it. Recent Events
UNESCO Conference
Dr. Peter van Alfen, ANS Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins, spoke at an international conference hosted by UNESCO on September 22 and 23 in Paris, France. The subject of the conference was Underwater Cultural Heritage Sites and their protection. Learn more about the meeting.
Ancient Taxes Workshop
A two-day workshop at NYU’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World focused on taxation principles and tax compliance in the Ancient World. ANS Associate Curator, Dr. Gilles Bransbourg, presented “Theory and Practice of Tax Extraction in the Later Roman Empire” on Tuesday, October 1. Learn more about the workshop.
Stephen K. Scher Lecture

An attentive and inquisitive audience was in attendance during the 2016 Stephen K. Scher Lecture on October 6 when Dr. Ulrich Pfisterer presented “Chardin’s Apes: Numismatics and the Science of Observation.” A lively Q&A ensued, and an intimate reception with Dr. Pfisterer, Chair of General Art History at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Institut für Kunstgeschichte Zentnerstr, and Dr. Stephen K. Scher, a renowned scholar who has lectured and published extensively on medieval and Renaissance art, concluded the event. This ANS event was held in the Lecture Hall at the Institute of Fine Arts (IFA), New York University.
U.S. Mexican Convention
Dr. Ute Wartenberg Kagan, ANS Executive Director, attended the U.S. Mexican Numismatic Association’s annual convention in Scottsdale, AZ on Oct. 6-8. The ANS had many publications on hand, including many books on monies of the Americas, as well as a dozen interesting coins – 10 from Mexico, one from Bolivia, and one from Peru with a recently independent Guatemalan countermark.
Some of the featured coins included: a Philip III silver 8 Reales, dated 1607, the first year the Mexico mint put dates on its coinage; a gilded medallion from 1814, celebrating the freedom of Ferdinand VII, as the Spanish hold over Mexico was breaking apart; and a half cut silver coin from 1880s Oaxaca with Chinese graffiti and chop marks (this object circulated in Asia, possibly Vietnam). Presentation at Columbia University
At the Center for the Ancient Mediterranean at Columbia University, Dr. Gilles Bransbourg presented, “Taxation and Inequality in the Later Roman Empire.” The lecture took place at the Italian Academy of Columbia University on October 21.
