Photography and Image Permissions

Image Permission, Reproduction Requests, and Online Image Terms of Service

Authors of articles, books, and other media (both print and digital) and producers of content who wish to use images produced by the American Numismatic Society (ANS) must abide by the terms and conditions regarding rights and permission as stated below, without exception. To request an image and permission to publish it, familiarize yourself with these terms of use and then either email the Collections Manager or call +1 212.571.4470 x161.

Permissions

The ANS can grant permission for the use of its media content for both non-commercial and commercial use. Permissions and fulfillment fees may apply depending on how you intend to use this media. The ANS may choose to grant either perpetual or one-time permissions, and this decision is made on a case-by-case basis. For most non-commercial uses, perpetual rights are granted.

Perpetual Rights

The ANS can grant non-exclusive, worldwide permission in all languages in all editions, print and electronic, to you to reproduce one or more images as long as the following conditions are met: the image(s) for the publication by its author(s) are allowed only a) in one work in print at any one time (one ISBN or two if in print in hardcover/paperback simultaneously plus ebooks for those); b) for a book of which the author(s) of the initial print edition is an author of the new version/edition; c) beyond the original Work only in a Work that has a copyright registration indicating it is a derivative work and identifying the earlier publication as a prior work on which the derivative work is based. Unless otherwise stated, the following credit line must be used in display and/or publications. When instructed, include the ANS accession number followed by the correct credit line.

(Example: ANS 1959.148.18. American Numismatic Society). You also agree to provide the ANS library with a gratis copy of the publication (if applicable) in which the ANS’s materials appear. Contact the ANS Librarian prior to sending printed material.

One-Time Rights

The ANS can grant non-exclusive, worldwide permission to you to reproduce (one time only), image(s) in print and in the print edition’s directly related electronic format(s).

Fees

In some instances, you may be charged for the use of ANS images. Depending on your needs, you may need to request permission to use an image in a publication and also request a print-ready digital copy of that image. Other fees may apply including image discovery (staff assistance in helping you find images for your publication) and express processing.

The rates quoted below are for images suitable for 1:1 reproduction in scholarly journals. All photography is done with digital equipment. Customers interested in very-high-resolution photography should contact the Collections Manager to discuss their needs and the charges that may apply.

The ANS no longer prints and ships photos.

All orders must be prepaid. Please remit by check drawn on a U.S. bank or by credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express).

There is no image permissions charge for personal, scholarly, or academic research use.

Images to be used in scholarly journals and monographs (published by universities, colleges, institutes of higher learning/research, or non-profits) are subject to the following permission fees per image based on the total expected print run. Image Discovery and Delivery

There may be times when you need help finding one of more images to use in your publication. Permissions-seekers who ask for assistance from the ANS for either commercial or non-commercial publications/research will be charged a standard image discovery fee, scalable depending on the number of images requested. This fee may be waived at the discretion of the ANS.

Permissions-seekers who are able to help themselves in finding images (via the ANS’s online collections or elsewhere) to use for their research and/or publication will not be charged an image discovery fee.

All images provided by the ANS will be digital (.jpg format unless otherwise requested) at a minimum resolution of 300 ppi (1200 ppi for line art) and will be delivered by either email, download link, or in the case of in-person requests, CD/DVD/USB.

Express Orders

If you require immediate assistance with your request, you will be assessed a surcharge for your priority order (see above).

Using Images from the ANS’s Online Collections

The American Numismatic Society (the “ANS”) makes available its collections (and at time the collections of partner institutions) online containing images and data. These online collections (e.g., numismatics.org/ocre) contain basic information about and images of these objects.

By using the ANS’s online utilities, you are accepting the “Terms and Conditions” and you can search the online catalogues, view objects and imagery from the ANS’s collections.

Documents, photographs, slides, and other media owned by the American Numismatic Society may be protected by copyright, trademark, or a related interest not owned by the ANS. It is the responsibility of the applicant to determine whether any such rights exist and to obtain necessary permission for use.

Public Domain

Photographs taken prior to 1925 are now in the public domain and do not require the ANS’s permission to publish. The ANS does ask as a professional courtesy, however, that users acknowledge the source of the image as “American Numismatic Society”.

How to Cite ANS Digital Images and Records

If you do decide to use/reference an ANS image or digital record (e.g., from OCRE), cite the full, stable URI. Example: https://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.1(2).aug.278.

Terms and Conditions

Access to and use of the ANS’s website is subject to the following terms and conditions and all applicable laws. By accessing this website, you agree to be bound by these terms and conditions:

Unless otherwise stated the ANS retains all rights, including copyright, in data, images, software, documentation, text, and other information contained in these files (collectively, the “Materials”) subject in some cases to third-party rights. Copyright and other proprietary rights may be held by individuals or entities other than, or in addition to, the ANS. The ANS does not warrant that the use of the Materials displayed on the site will not infringe the rights of third parties. The responsibility for determining whether the ANS or some other party holds the relevant rights in a work of art or in any of the Materials remains solely with the user. The ANS will have no responsibility for making any such determination, or in securing rights from a third party, for any user.

If you believe that your work has been copied and is accessible on this site in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, or that your intellectual property rights have been otherwise violated, we urge you to contact the ANS with details of your claim. The ANS will promptly remove any material that is determined to be infringing on the rights of others.

2. Non-Commercial Use

The ANS is making the Materials available for limited non-commercial, educational, and personal use only, in accordance with the fair use provisions of the copyright laws. Users may download these files for their personal or educational use, subject to any additional terms or restrictions, that may be applicable to the individual file or program. Users must cite the author and source of the Materials as they would material from any printed work, and the citations should, depending on the online collection cited, include either the URL (e.g., “https://numismatics.org“) in addition to all copyright and any proprietary notices contained on the Materials. Any use of the Materials that do not qualify as fair use are subject to the ANS’s prior written approval, and the user must request and receive such approval prior to any use. Copying or redistribution in any manner for commercial use, including commercial publication, or for personal gain is strictly prohibited, without the express prior written permission of the ANS or the relevant third-party rights holder, as the case may be. Images in the public domain are exempt from these restrictions.

3. Warranty

Without limiting the foregoing, all Materials on the site are provided “AS IS” WITHOUT A WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR USE, AND/OR NON-INFRINGEMENT. Links to other sites may be provided on this web site to material outside the ANS’s control. The ANS may include such links for the convenience of the user, but does not control or take responsibility for the content of any off-site pages or linked sites.

The ANS appreciates your use of its online collections and understands that users may wish to link to these. The ANS retains the right to require that you remove such a link, which right shall be exercised in the ANS’s sole discretion.

5. Modifications of These Terms

The ANS may at any time revise these terms and conditions by updating this page and such revisions will be effective upon posting to this page. You are bound by any such revisions and should therefore review the Terms and Conditions on a regular basis.
