The images on coins minted under the Roman Empire conveyed messages about the emperor, his achievements, and benefactions. Yet, were these images actually observed and understood by the very diverse inhabitants of the Roman world? Professor Fleur Kemmers of Goethe-Universität Frankfurt will discuss how various sources (literary, archaeological, and numismatic) can show how and by whom the messages on Roman coins were (mis)understood.
