Obverse: Within wreath of palm branch, on l., and olive branch, on r., a crested shield of arms: viz, two swords inward on a chevron
azure, three roses, two in chief, one is base, on a field or (or a field ermine); crest, an arm dexter, armored, wielding
a scimitar. (N.B. these arms are those of Sir Cornwallis Ricketts, of The Elms, Gloucester.) Dentilated borde within partial
wire rim.
Reverse: RICKETTS'S/ CIRCUS - Central dot; above insc., triple pendant festoon of leaves; below, oak branches to l. and r;, joined at center, with five
acorns on each branch; at knot, above, small arabesque with dot above; below knot, oval rosette.
"R8." "Extra rare." Perhaps struck on a blank intended for a US quarter dollar, and thus dating ca. 1796 (dated by Rulau 1793-1795).
A product ot the early U.S. mint, the Ricketts Circus dies, used for the restrikes (MIller and Adams 430), were present in
the Peale collection at the mint in 1841.
