Biographical Note
Raphael (Raph) E. Solomon (d. 1992) of New York City became a member of the American Numismatic Society in 1952 and eventually was made a fellow (1986) and a patron (1986) of the Society. With Oscar Schilke, he wrote America’s Foreign Coins, 1793-1857 (1964) and he wrote the chapter on foreign coins in the American colonies for the Society’s bicentennial publication Studies on Money in Early America (1976). He also served as historian, president (1968-1969), and chairman of the board of the New York Numismatic Club.

Contains correspondence, drafts of articles and lectures, and ephemera. Includes letters and a draft pertaining to a lecture for the American Numismatic Association on the topic of foreign coins in circulation in the American colonies (1976); two letters about his book America’s Foreign Coins, 1793-1857 (1965, 1974); routine letters from the American Numismatic Society regarding his contribution to the book Studies on Money in Early America (1976) and a donation (1979); membership cards from the American Numismatic Association (1952-1992) and the New York Numismatic Club (1953-1974); a brochure from the American Numismatic Society exhibit Chinese Communist Money, 1931-1949; two photographs of Solomon (1979 and 1989); and a photocopy of Gold Coin Table, Giving the Exact Weight, the Assay, and the Present Value in the United States, According to the Gold Coin Bill Enacted by Congress, in the Year 1834.
