The reverse inscription, “Ich hatt’einen Kameraden/Einen bessern find’st du nit” (“I hada comrade, a better one you will never
find”),are the first two lines of a traditional Germanmilitary lament composed by Ludwig Uhlandin 1809 and put to music by
Friedrich Silcherin 1825.
