The 2016 ANS Year End Appeal Is On!

At this time of year, it is customary that we ask our friends and members to help keep the Society strong by making a gift to the ANS.

Dear Friends,

This past year marked the 158th anniversary of the Society—a remarkable testament to a modern, evolving institution that remains committed to its 19th-century purpose: to promote the recognition of how coins, currency, medals, and other numismatic objects aid in a proper understanding of cultures throughout the world and throughout history.

As we strive to fulfill our mission, we are devoting much of our resources toward making our treasures accessible to the broadest audience possible. To that end we are engaged in a long-term effort to make ever more publications, lectures, exhibits, and, of course, our collections available for viewing and study online.

At our annual meeting in October, members heard ANS staff present an overview of their work, which detailed their extraordinary breadth of expertise. You can read the full text by visiting our completely overhauled website, numismatics.org. I urge you to do so—and while you are there, to take a few moments to look around. You will find the website is much easier to use and navigate. In fact, numismatics.org is now the world’s portal into the collections and activities of the ANS, and is by far our most widely read “publication.” This year alone, OCRE was utilized by over 32,0000 people; 37,000 people used MANTIS to search our collections; and numismatics.org received over 1 million page views during nearly one quarter of a million sessions by visitors from 196 countries.

These are just a few examples of how the ANS is making huge strides toward its goal of making our many treasures accessible to an ever broader and more varied community of interested people. But as is often the case, this all takes considerable amounts of money. Accordingly, as the year now rushes to its end, I ask all of you to give as generously as you can. We are trying to raise $75,000 by the end of the year, an amount that will greatly increase our ability to reach our goals.

So, please, make a tax-deductible donation to the ANS now, and help secure our footing for the coming twelve months. With your help, I know we will accomplish great things in the months ahead.

With sincerest thanks, and my best wishes for a fulfilling 2017,

Dr. Ute Wartenberg Kagan
