Proper Citation Format

When citing materials in the ANS Archives, the following general rules should be followed:

I. In Publications

Format
Item identification, date (if known), collection name (if appropriate), box number, folder number, item number (if appropriate), Archives, American Numismatic Society.

Item identification, date, collection name (if appropriate), box number, folder number, item number (if appropriate), Archives, American Numismatic Society, donor name (if appropriate).

IV. Photographs of Objects from the ANS collection

Unless otherwise stated, the following credit line must be used in display and/or publications. When instructed, include the ANS accession number followed by the correct credit line.  You also agree to provide the ANS library with a gratis copy of the publication (if applicable) in which the ANS’s materials appear.

V. MANTIS Collections Database Online

When citing an ANS collections webpage in your book or article. The format of your citation in a footnote or endnote must include the ANS accession number (always with the ANS prefix), American Numismatic Society, date accessed by the author, and URI.
