Long Table 103. Another Cistophoric Mystery: The ATRA Series and Its Role in the Late-Republican Coinage from the Province of Asia

By Emma Pratte

Join Antonello Mastronardi, PhD candidate in Classics at the University of Michigan and current intern at the ANS, as he presents on the large cistophoric issue known as the ATRA series. This particularly obscure issue—named after the most common reading of the monogram present on the reverse type (ΑΤΡΑ in Greek characters)—has been dated to different stages of late-Republican cistophoric production and attributed to different mints. Building on previous scholarship alongside new ATRA specimens from trade, this lecture aims to understand the role that this series might have played within the broader monetary context of the province of Asia in this period.
