Dr. Michel Amandry, "Renewing Coinage by Means of Overstriking: The case of Hadrian's Cistophori."

In this talk, Dr. Michel Amandry, former Directeur du département des Monnaies, médailles et antiques at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, delivers the 2019 Harry W. Fowler memorial lecture at the American Numismatic Society. Dr. Amandry discusses his latest research on the cistophori of Hadrian. As one of the most important coinages of the ancient world, the cistophori were produced continuously by a number of city-states in western Asia Minor from the late Hellenistic period on through the Roman Imperial period.
