War and Peace in Miniature

Mount Vernon’s Donald W. Reynolds Education Center—housed on George Washington’s personal estate—opened a exhibition War and Peace in Miniature: Medals from the American Numismatic Society. It features medals awarded by the Continental Congress to honor military commanders who defeated their British opponents, medals commemorating the U.S.’s peacetime efforts towards diplomacy and trade, and six rare examples of Indian peace medals from George Washington’s administration. The exhibit will be on view in Mount Vernon through March 31, 2020. More…

2017 Saltus Award to Bogomil Nikolov

On October 8 Dr. Wartenberg traveled to Bulgaria to present Bogomil Nikolov with the 2017 Saltus Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Art of the Medal. The ceremony was held at the ACADEMIA Gallery of the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, before a thoroughly packed house of well-wishers and admirers. Those who attended were also able to view an exhibition of Nikolov’s work, which was on display from October 1 to 19. More…

October Money Talks | May the Little Things Not Perish: The History of the ANS

Librarian and Archivist David Hill welcomed a group of members for a look back at the ANS’s 160-year history. Beginning with the 1858 invitation letter sent out for the very first meeting of the American Numismatic Society, selections from the ANS Archives were passed around and discussed.

2017–2018 Acquisitions on Display

Collections Manager Dr. Elena Stolyarik and MACO Collection Manager Taylor Hartley curated a selection from the 2017–2018 acquisitions for exhibition at the ANS office, featuring MACO medals, and coins and banknotes. Thank you to all of our donors.

XXV Annual ICOMON Meeting

Ute Wartenberg delivered the keynote address at the XXV Annual ICOMON Meeting on “Future-proofing Numismatics in Museums: Issues of Conservation and Collection Management” held on October 3-6 at the Numismatic Museum in Athens, Greece. ANS Trustee Mary Lannin also presented “Women as Numismatic Curators: Equals in an Unequal World?” where she examined the role of women as curators in numismatic museums.

Former Seminar Student named CEO of Cummer Museum

Adam Levine, Eric P. Newman Graduate Seminar Class of 2009, will begin his new role as CEO of the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Levine has more than 10 years of management and curatorial experience. From 2011 to 2013 he served as collections management assistant at the Greek and Roman Art Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In 2009, he cofounded the Art Research Technologies in New York City and served as CEO until 2012. More…

U.S. Mexican Numismatic Association Convention

On October 11–13, Gilles Bransbourg represented the ANS at the 7th Annual U.S. Mexican Numismatic Association Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona where we were honored to receive the 2018 U.S. Mexican Numismatic Association award for outstanding contribution to the promotion of numismatics. Dr. Bransbourg brought a selection of colonial and post-independence Mexican coins from the ANS collection and welcomed six new members to the Society. Special thanks for Kyle Ponterio. More…
