Money Talks: Recently Discovered Numismatic Hoard of 12th-13th centuries from Samshvilde Medieval Site

On Thursday, November 3, join Professor David Berikashvili from the Department of Archaeology, Anthropology, and Art at the University of Georgia, Tbilisi, for a review of a recently excavated medieval hoard from Samshvilde, a settlement in Georgia in the South Caucasus. Dr. T. Corey Brennan is a professor of Classics at Rutgers University. His newest book, published by Oxford University Press on October 3, 2022, is: The Fasces: A History of Ancient Rome’s Most Dangerous Political Symbol. Deep Water Shipwrecks and Coins in the Americas

Upcoming Long Tables

Dr. Danny Syon, the Head of Scientific Assessment Branch of the Israel Antiquities Authority, will speak on a hoard of Syrian tetradrachms; 2022 ANS Summer Seminar Student Eduardo García-Molina will present on serrated bronzes of the Hellenstic king Seleukos IV; and the final Long Table of the month will be hosted by Professor Cristian Gazdac of the University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania). The ANS will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday and will not host a Long Table during the final week of November.

October in Review

Inaugural Collier Prize Ceremony and Lecture

The Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics biennially celebrates outstanding publications or digital resources related to ancient numismatics (650 BCE to 300 CE). On October 13, the ANS held an award ceremony honoring its inaugural recipient, Roman Imperial Coinage II.3: From AD 117 to AD 138 – Hadrian, with a lecture by its author, numismatics scholar Richard AbdyWatch on YouTube.

Augustus B. Sage Society ANS Day 

Trustees and members of the Augustus B. Sage Society, major donors of the American Numismatic Society, visited our New York City headquarters for a special series of events on October 14. This included a tour of the Medallic Art Company archive storage facilities with Chief Curator Peter van Alfen, private research time with ANS curators and librarians, and a dinner hosted at the Harvard Club of New York City.

165th Annual Meeting of the ANS

On October 15, the ANS held our 2022 Annual Meeting. It included departmental updates from ANS staff and the unveiling of new donor plaques, followed by a reception. Watch the proceedings on YouTube.

The Future of Money

On October 22, Prof. Dr. Johannes Beermann, Member of the Executive Board at the Deutsche Bundesbank, and Mark A. Gould, Chief Payments Executive of the Federal Reserve Financial Services at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, visited the ANS to speak on the future of money. ANS Executive Director Dr. Gilles Bransbourg moderated the panel discussion.

ANS Members’ Breakfast 

Thanks to the support of an anonymous donor, the ANS hosted a special breakfast for our members at the 2022 Whitman Baltimore Winter Expo, with brief remarks by Trustees Mary Lannin and recently-elected Chairman of the Board Michael Beall.
