Long Table 144. Sponsianus Gold and Its Times

Friday, June 30
1:00 PM ET

The publication of “Authenticating Coins of the ‘Roman Emperor’ Sponsianus” in the November issue of PLOS ONE caused a sensation around the world. Aleksander Bursche and Kyrylo Myzgin (Department of Numismatics and Museology at the University of Warsaw) will present that the material discussed in the article were not barbaric imitations but instead modern copies, likely dating to the 17th century. They will review the circumstances that led to their creation, including the antiquarian interests of the 15th–17th centuries, when similar medailles were made based on antique motifs, drawings, or lithographs.

ANS Members only. A link will be sent to members the day of the event.
