Jesse Kraft Receives a 2022 EPNNES Newman Grant

On May 25, the Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (EPNNES) announced the 2022 Newman Grants, created to financially assist numismatic authors and organizations pursuing original research in American numismatics.

Dr. Jesse Kraft, ANS Assistant Curator of American Numismatics, is one of this year’s winners. He will research the eighteenth-century die engraver Elias Gervais, the possible maker of the 1776 Continental dollar. This will take him to Germany and Switzerland to study primary source documents produced by and related to Gervais. Since 2015, the history of the Continental dollar has been up for debate as evidence continues to mount regarding its origins, which increasingly points to Central Europe in the early 1780s rather than the United States in the late 1770s.
