Hahlo-96-98, Monmouth County Historical Society badge

American Numismatic Society, 1987.147.39.

96. Reverse of the Monmouth County Badge.

98. Members’ badge of the Monmouth County Historical Society. “Indian chief deeding the land to the county.”

The commission for this medal came from Edward Dean Adams (1846-1931) who was a member of the Society and active in the American Numismatic Society. At the ANS, Adams was especially involved in their medals program and was very familiar with Brenner. Despite the title in this catalogue, one uncommon feature of a medal of this period is that the native American depicted isn’t an archetype or an allegory. It is an actual person, Princeton educated, Shawuskukh-kung (Wilted Grass), sachem of the Lenni Lenape, who was also known by the name Bartholomew Scott Calvin (1756-1840).
