Despite the catalogue listing, this is not the first of a series, but it was an important commission for Brenner. It is the first he received from the American Numismatic Society. Issued to celebrate the opening of the new Saint Luke’s Hospital in 1896, the obverse depicts a posthumous portrait of the hospital’s founder, William Augustus Muhlenberg (1796-1877).
