Hahlo-81-92, The Society of the Cincinnati medal

American Numismatic Society, 1898.7.1.

81. Medal of the Society of the Cincinnati.

92. Reverse of the Society of the Cincinnati medal.

Brenner’s Society of the Cincinnati medal is not an officially commissioned work by the Society. Created in or before 1898, it is derived from the original 1783 design for a medal by Major Pierre Charles L’Enfant (1754-1825). An official version (not by Brenner) was eventually issued by Whitehead and Hoag in 1914. While cataloguing the Society’s medals for the Numismatist in 1934, Major Erskine Hume, Assistant Secretary General of the Society of the Cincinnati, was informed of its existence by Henry Russell Drowne (1860-1934) of the American Numismatic Society.
