Hahlo-129, Dr. Rupert Norton plaquette

American Numismatic Society, 1987.147.159.

129. Dr. Rupert Norton, John [sic] Hopkins Hospital.

Rupert Norton (1867-1914) was a friend of both Brenner and James Loeb and their time in Paris overlapped in 1906. This portrait was completed that year, before Brenner returned to New York. Norton was there as the medical officer of the New York Mutual Life Insurance Company. A year later he would become assistant superintendent of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Son of the Harvard professor and Trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Charles Eliot Norton (1807-1908), the plaquette is almost a double portrait, with the carefully rendered likeness of his father on the wall to the left of the fireplace.
