The Cullum medal was designed by Lydia Field Emmet (1866-1952) for the American Geographical Society in 1896. Brenner engraved the dies. Both were members of the National Academy of Design. The medal is named for Major General George Washington Cullum (1809-1892) the vice president of the Society and is awarded for the advancement of geographical studies. The second recipient of the medal, Fridtjof Nansen, mentioned in the listing for the reverse is the subject of his own medal by Brenner (see #67).
