Hahlo-103-105, Panama Canal Service Medal badge

American Numismatic Society, 1987.147.68.

103. Reverse of the Panama Canal medal, showing the Culebra Cut, with the Arms of Panama.

105. The Panama Canal medal, presented by the Government to all employees for two years’ continuous service on the Canal.

The commission for the 1908 Panama Canal Service medal came to Brenner through Francis Davis Millet (1848-1912), the same Frank Millet who authored the introduction to this catalogue and who perished on the Titanic the day this exhibition opened. It was while the Roosevelt was sitting for his portrait (also see #6 and #137) that Brenner first brought up the idea for using his Lincoln portrait on a U.S. coin (see #136).
