Hahlo-101, Samuel Putnam Avery, Esq. medallion

American Numismatic Society, 1987.147.131.

101. Samuel Putnam Avery, Esq., replica of the one bearing dedication by the artist.

Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) was an artist, connoisseur, collector and dealer, as well as a Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Active in the American Numismatic Society as an avid collector of contemporary French medals, it was Avery who gave Brenner the letter of introduction to meet George A. Lucas in Paris (see #s 93 and 121). As this catalogue suggests, the Avery portrait can be found in different formats. Here, the word “replica” still means an original example, and doesn’t carry the connotation the word currently has for inauthenticity.
