Upcoming “Money Talks,” How to Read Latin on Coins
On March 10, Assistant Curator of Roman Coins Lucia Carbone will give a basic introduction to Latin as a language and how it is used on coins. No prior knowledge of Latin is required. This will be the first of a set of programs within the “Money Talks: Numismatic Conversations” series, in which ANS staff will teach how to read and understand foreign inscriptions on coins, ancient and modern. The ABSS Trip to Nevada
On September 20–23 the Augustus B. Sage Society will take its first U.S. excursion to Virginia City and Carson City, Nevada, where participants will explore the gold and silver mines along with 19th-century mansions, stores, saloons, and a number of captivating cemeteries. April “Money Talks,” To Counterfeit Is Death
To Counterfeit Is Death is a seldom enforced threat which is seen on many of the bills issued during our British Colonial and Confederation eras. Join Ray Williams on April 21 when he will be discussing the economic climate making paper money necessary, the counterfeiting of bills and the anti-counterfeiting measures taken, the famous (and not so famous) colonists involved with paper money. Dangerous Beauty: Medusa in Classical Art
Beginning in the fifth century BC, Medusa became increasingly anthropomorphic and feminine, undergoing a visual transformation from grotesque to beautiful. “Dangerous Beauty: Medusa in Classical Art,” featuring a number of ANS coins, explores how the beautification of terrifying figures like Medusa, sirens, and other female half-human beings manifested in the idealizing humanism of Classical Greek art, and their enduring appeal in both Roman and later Western art. Mariangela Puglisi will be the 2018 Summer Seminar Visiting Scholar
The ANS is pleased to announce that the Visiting Scholar for this year’s Eric P. Newman Graduate Seminar in Numismatics will be Prof. Mariangela Puglisi of the Università degli Studi de Messina. Prof. Puglisi is, among other things, a specialist in ancient coin iconography and coins found in archaeological excavations.
The Horse in Ancient Greek Art
ANS coins are among the objects included in “The Horse in Ancient Greek Art” exhibition at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The show features Greek vases, sculpture, and coins that depict scenes from real-life horses pulling chariots to fantastical horses and horse-hybrids. Open now through July 8, 2018. See More…
A Visit from the Scuola D’Italia G. Marconi
On February 17, students from the Scuola D’Italia G. Marconi visited the ANS. After Lucia Carbone presented an overview of the history of Roman coinage, Gilles Bransbourg discussed some relevant case studies from Imperial and Late antique coinage, and Peter van Alfen introduced them to the history of ANS and guided the group through the premises of the Society.
