Upcoming Lecture: Ancient Coinage and the Portable Antiquities Scheme
Join Dr. Andrew Brown of the British Museum on Tuesday, September 10, for Ancient Coinage and the Portable Antiquities Scheme. The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) was created in England in 1997 to record archaeological material found by members of the public. Coins are the single largest class of object and with more than 300,000 ancient coins to date, presenting an unparalleled dataset with the potential to change our perceptions of the ancient British landscape. September Money Talks: Signs of Inflation
On September 21, join Deputy Director Gilles Bransbourg for the first Money Talks of our Fall/Winter season. Inflation has been the ‘friend’ of all major wars and crises throughout human history. Fiduciary mediums of payment rely on trust—fides in Latin—and may lose all value when too abundant and debased. In that sense, inflation is as old as money itself. We will travel through space and time through numismatic objects to encounter the forms of inflation experienced by ancient Greeks and Romans, Africans, Chinese, modern Europeans, and finally our contemporary world. Coinage and Economy of the Early Medieval Mediterranean
On September 26 and 27, 2019, the ANS and Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) will be hosting a conference organized by the Networks & Neighbors research group: Coinage and Economy of the Early Medieval Mediterranean
This colloquium will focus on the monetary economy of the Visigothic kingdom in its Mediterranean context. Participants will include specialists on Visigothic coinage, history, and archaeology as well as experts on the monetary economies of other parts of the early medieval Mediterranean world. The conference will consist of a keynote seminar at BMCC on the evening of Thursday, September 26, followed by an all-day seminar at the ANS on Friday September 27.
Attendance is free, but space is limited for the all-day event on September 27. Pre-registration by September 1 is required, and we ask all pre-registrants to give a brief (one sentence) statement of their interest in the topic of the conference.
Notes on the Numismatic Collecting of Archer Milton Huntington
On September 5, Curator Emeritus Robert W. Hoge will give Notas Sobre el Coleccionismo Numismático de Archer Milton Huntington (Notes on the Numismatic Collecting of Archer Milton Huntington, to be presented in Spanish) at the XXXVII Tertúlia dels Bibliòfils de Tarragona (the 37th Tertulia of the Bibliophiles of Tarragona). It will take place in the group’s headquarters at the Reial Societat Arqueològica Tarraconense (Royal Archaeological Society of Tarragona) at Carrer Major 35, principal, Tarragona. The talk will discuss the great breadth and importance of Huntington’s pan-Iberian collection, and its eventual sale and the recovery of materials that the ANS has been able to accomplish in recent years. August in Review
IAPN 2019 Book Prize to Catharine Lorber
On August 15, the International Association of Professional Numismatists awarded Catharine Lorber with its 2019 Book Prize for Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire. This is the first time an ANS publication has won this prestigious award. Special thanks to Oliver Hoover who was instrumental in the book’s completion but was unable to attended the reception.
The MFA Boston is the latest to contribute to Nomisma
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is the latest contributor to the Nomisma.org Linked Open Data cloud, providing data for more than 2,000 Roman Republican and Imperial coins to CRRO and OCRE. This is the largest contribution so far from a major American encyclopedic art museum.
Two NLG Awards to the ANS
The ANS was honored to receive two Numismatic Literary Guild awards this year! The Journal of Early American Numismatics won the 2019 award for Best Club or Not-for-Profit Periodical and Catharine Lorber’s Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire won for the Best Book on World Coins (pre-1500).
ANA World’s Fair of Money
Executive Director Ute Wartenberg, Deputy Director Gilles Bransbourg, and Membership Associate Emma Pratte attended the ANA’s 2019 World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, IL. They were also present for the annual ANA Banquet, the IAPN books prize predestination, NLG Award Luncheon, and many other numismatics events during the week—including a talk that Dr. Bransbourg gave to the Numismatic Bibliomania Society Symposium.
