American Journal of Numismatics

The American Journal of Numismatics annually publishes original, peer-reviewed research in all areas of numismatics, in the form of articles or short notes. Articles relating numismatic research to wider questions of economic and social history, archaeology, and related disciplines are particularly welcome. Questions and proposals should be emailed to Nathan T. Elkins (ancient topics) or David Yoon (medieval, modern, and other, non-ancient topics).

The deadline for submission for the 2025 volume is May 1, 2024. The 2024 volume is now closed.

Read the AJN Guidelines 2022.

Peer Review

All manuscripts submitted to the AJN undergo a double-blind peer review. Manuscripts are anonymized and shared with two scholars outside of the ANS who are expert in the manuscript’s subject matter. Acceptance is not guaranteed, and authors should expect to undertake revisions based on the reviewers’ comments. The review period for a manuscript can take up to six months depending on its content and complexity.

Ownership and Management

The American Journal of Numismatics is published annually by the American Numismatic Society and is funded through ANS memberships and individual and institutional subscriptions. The AJN is edited by two senior editors who are full-time ANS staff members. Production is overseen by the ANS Director of Publications.

Governing Body

The AJN is an official publication of the American Numismatic Society and is governed by its editorial board of experts and ANS Trustees and Fellows. The current editorial board consists of:

John W. Adams • Gilles Bransbourg • Andrew Burnett • Wolfgang Fischer-Bossert • Suzanne Frey-Kupper • Evridiki Georganteli • Kenneth W. Harl • Jonathan Kagan • Paul T. Keyser • John M. Kleeberg • John H. Kroll • Ira Rezak • Stuart D. Sears • Peter van Alfen • Bernhard Weisser

Editorial Team

The AJN is edited by Dr. Nathan T. Elkins (ANS Deputy Director) and Mr. David Yoon (Mark Salton Associate Curator of Medieval, Renaissance, and Early European Numismatics at the ANS). Both can be reached by mail at the American Numismatic Society, 75 Varick Street, Floor 11, New York, NY 10013.

Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain the right to their work published in the AJN. Authors grant the American Numismatic Society rights to publish the work, which is copyright the American Numismatic Society. Authors are allowed to place their work in their own institutions’ repositories and may share pre-print versions of their articles online. The ANS asks authors to wait one year from the date of publication to share their final, published versions.

Anyone wishing to cite an article published in the AJN may do so as long as they credit the author and journal. Contact the editors to request re-publication of entire works, or for image rights and permissions questions.

Author Fees

The ANS does not burden its authors with article processing charges (APCs). Should an author wish for color in the print edition of the AJN, the ANS will ask for a modest subvention to cover the added cost. Authors are expected to pay their own fees for image rights and permissions for images used in their work that are owned by entities outside of the ANS.

Research Misconduct

All manuscripts are checked for plagiarism prior to being entered into peer review. Manuscripts will be returned to the author(s) to remedy should plagiarism be detected. Refusal to correct plagiarized work will result in immediate rejection of the manuscript.

Text generated from AI, machine learning, or similar algorithmic tools cannot be used in articles published by the American Numismatic Society, nor can the accompanying figures, images, or graphics be the products of such tools, without explicit permission from the editors. In addition, an AI program cannot be a contributor, author, or co-author of an ANS publication. A violation of this policy constitutes scholarly misconduct and immediate rejection of the manuscript submitted for peer review.

For ancient material, authors should give preference to illustrations of objects held by institutional collections over unprovenanced material from the trade or in private collections. Many institutions allow images of their holdings to be used free of charge for academic publications such as the AJN; if uncertain whether this applies, please discuss image sources with the editors. Illustrations of objects from the trade or in private collections may be used where necessary for completeness, if they can be cited to a verifiable source; however, objects with a verifiable pre-1970 provenance or in institutional collections should be used wherever possible. In general, articles that deal with types and iconography should always use institutional images, unless dealing with a type that is unknown in such collections. If contributors are unclear as to the guidelines or expectations, please contact the appropriate editor.

Ethics

i) Authors and contributors must not be engaged in the act of either appraising or attempting to sell any objects featured in their manuscripts submitted for publication.

ii) Any complaints or appeals regarding work published in the AJN will be submitted in writing to the ANS Director of Publications and considered by the journal’s editorial board. If the complaint/appeal is judged to have merit, the ANS will issue a retraction through the next volume of the journal to be published.

iii) Authors must disclose any potential conflict of interest at the time of submission.

iv) As stated above, authors may share pre-print versions of their work online. Published versions may be shared by authors one year following the date of publication.

v) Ethical oversight is managed by the AJN‘s editors in cooperation with the journal’s editorial board.

vi) All images reproduced by authors in their manuscripts must be used with explicit written permission from their respective rights holders. All quoted material must be cited as defined by the Chicago Manual of Style.

vii) Post-publication discussions and corrections should be brought to the attention of the AJN‘s editors for consideration. Corrections will be published in the next volume of the AJN. Rebuttal articles will be considered for publication but are subject to double-blind peer review.

Archiving and Preservation

After three years, volumes of the AJN are given to the Newman Numismatic Portal, which is maintained by Washington University St. Louis and shares that content with the Internet Archive as Open Access.

Advertising

The AJN neither accepts nor publishes advertising of any kind.

Direct Marketing

The AJN and its editors and editorial board do not engage in direct marketing of the journal. The American Numismatic Society does make prospective Members aware that the journal is available as an add-on to the benefits of annual Society membership.
