An Auction to Benefit the Society’s Campaign to Endow the Chair of the Executive Director
The American Numismatic Society thanks Stanley DeForest Scott for the collection of beautiful coins donated to benefit the Society’s Campaign to Endow the Chair of the Executive Director. The coins were sold through live auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries at the NY International Numismatic Convention. Together with the previous auction held in November, over $71,000 has been raised for this Endowment Campaign. A third group of US currency, also donated by Mr. Scott, will be sold at a forthcoming Stack’s auction. See More…
Various Staff Promotions at the Society
On January 1, a number of senior appointments were made at the Society. Dr. Gilles Bransbourg, formerly Associate Curator of Roman coins, has been appointed to fill the position of Deputy Director. This senior position had been vacant since the departure of Andrew Meadows almost four years ago. Dr. Bransbourg, who holds a PhD in Roman history, came to the Society with a background in finance and management. He will oversee the financial management and membership operations, while continuing his numismatic research. Dr. Peter van Alfen, Margaret Thompson Curator of Greek Coins, has been named Chief Curator and will be in charge of all curatorial staff and collections. Dr. van Alfen joined the Society in 2002 and is a leading authority on ancient Greek coins as well as medallic art. Dr. Lucia Carbone is now Edlow Family Assistant Curator of Roman Coins; and Eshel Kreiter has joined the full-time staff in her position as Director of Development.
Seleucid Coins Online is Now Live

Columbia University at the ANS
As part of its educational programs, the American Numismatic Society is holding a seminar for students of Columbia University. Dr Lucia Carbone, Edlow Family Assistant Curator of Roman Coins, is teaching a 14-week course, where students will learn the basics of Roman Republican coinage, handle specimens from the Society’s collection and write a research paper.
More than 20,000 Roman Republican Coins Added to CRRO
In a watershed moment for Roman Republican numismatics, 20,237 coins with high-resolution IIIF images from the Bibliothèque nationale de France have been incorporated into the Nomisma.org SPARQL endpoint, and are therefore available in Coinage of the Roman Republic Online (CRRO). This nearly doubles the coverage of Republican coinage—there had previously been about 26,000 coins available through CRRO from 18 museums or archaeological databases. Read More…
2018 Archaeological Institute of America/Society for Classical Studies Joint Annual Meeting
ANS Assistant Curator of Romans Coins, Lucia Carbone, and Deputy Director, Gilles Bransbourg, were participants in the 2018 Archaeological Institute of America/Society for Classical Studies Joint Annual Meeting in Boston, from January 5–7.
