This massive achievement in numismatics is presented as a two-volume set—one volume for precious metal and the other for bronze. Monetary History and Numismatics Summer School

July 2 – July 14 our Chief Curator Peter van Alfen, along with Professor Oğuz Tekin of Koç University AKMED, will again be hosting the Monetary History and Numismatics Summer School at Koç University’s AKMED center in Antalya, Turkey. The program will cover the basics of numismatics as well as offer an introduction to the rich contribution of numismatics to the economic and monetary history of the Ancient and Byzantine worlds. ABSS Trip to Nevada

The importance of Nevada to American numismatics—and American history—can hardly be overstated. It was there in the hills near Virginia City and Carson City, in 1859, that prospectors uncovered the richest deposit of silver and gold ever found in the United States. Members of the Augustus B. The Getty Villa

After three years of work, the galleries of the Villa were reopened with an entirely new arrangement of the collection, offering a new journey through ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art in its cultural and historical context. The ANS is pleased to be part of such an exquisite exposition. Ute Wartenberg, along with with other members of the ANS staff, worked closely with the Getty’s Senior Curator of Antiquities, Dr. Jeffrey Spier, to select ANS coins for display. Thirty-three objects from the Society’s Greek and Roman collections were incorporated into the exhibition. More…

By Stanford University, Prof. Walter Scheidel gave the 2018 Harry W. Fowler Memorial Lecture, “The Great Alternative? on June 12. The lecture discussed how the ancient world produced two major independent traditions of coinage: one in the Aegean and the other in early China. Watch the full lecture here.

The Boldre Hoard Remains Intact

ANS member and former Trustee, Richard Beleson recently travelled more than 3,000 miles to see the Boldre Hoard displayed in the St. Barbe Museum in Lymington, Hampshire, England. In 2014, the hoard—1,608 third century coins dating back to AD 249—was found in situ within a Romano-British pottery vessel. A campaign began to prevent the hoard from being split up and Mr. Beleson generously offered to match donations from the people of Lymington, contributing almost a third of the campaign’s goal. The collection has remained intact and is now on display less than two miles from where it was found. More…

On June 16, our Photographer Alan Roche, presented “The Art of Photographing Coins.” He showed the group various aspects involved in the production of high-resolution images of coins and banknotes. Through hands-on photographic demonstrations, Mr. Roche showed the group how to photograph their coins like a pro.
