The Huntington Medal Award

Edward Newell’s Huntington Award Medal was the first ever received, given by the ANS in 1918 (ANS 1968.44.1).

Archer M. Huntington Award for Excellence in Numismatic Scholarship is conferred annually in honor of the late Archer M. Huntington, benefactor and President of the ANS from 1905–1910. The medal was designed in 1908 by Emil Fuchs to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the ANS. At Huntington’s request, his image does not appear on it.

Bronze examples were sold to members to fund the creation of the medal, and some extras were awarded to collectors who displayed pieces at exhibitions sponsored by the Society. However, as the Council later noted, when the medal was commissioned, “[i]t was provided that specimens in silver should be awarded from time to time, in recognition of literary or other services to the science of numismatics.”

As stocks of the original Huntington Medal ran low, the Society commissioned a new medal to be stuck, which was designed by Eugene L. Daub. An open book, symbolizing scholarship, is featured on the obverse and the outline of coins is shown on the reverse.
