Medal of Honor, type 1, authorized in 1862; awarded to enlisted men and officers (starting after March 3, 1863) for gallantry
and meritorious service. The ANS specimen was awarded to Orrin Murch (Company C of the 27th Maine Infantry Regiment) but never
reached the recipient. It is an example from the group of 911 medals of honor (864 of which were from 27th Maine) that were
rescinded in 1917 review.
