Biographical Note

Early American Coppers is a non-profit founded in 1967 for collectors of early U.S. copper coins, such as Colonials, Half Cents, Large Cents, and Hard Time Tokens. EAC publishes a bi-monthly magazine called “Penny-Wise” with original articles about the history, grading, attribution, and rarity of early coppers.

Scope and Content Note

Folder 1: Membership correspondence and fixed price lists, 1969-1986. The correspondence chiefly concerns membership renewal and EAC events, with some letters about the purchase of coins and numismatic books. One letter encloses several copper impressions of coins. Correspondents include Jeffrey Oliphant, Bill Weber, Ted Naftzger, William A. Weimer, Phil and Reneé Ralls, Frank H. Stillinger, Warren A. Lapp, Jules Reiver, Raymond Chatham, and Clinton Hollins.

Folder 2: Correspondence, 1970-1978. These letters discuss numismatic publications and the compiling of an index for EAC, personal business between members, and some official club notices. Included are two programs for the annual EAC convention in 1978. Correspondents include Jeffrey Oliphant, Warren A. Lapp, Paul Oliphant, and the American Numismatic Society.

Folder 3: Correspondence with John D. Wright, 1970-1979. Some of the letters discuss the compiling of an index using computer cards, tapes, and programming languages such as Fortran, SNOBOL, and COBOL. Others discuss penny quizzes and membership dues. Included is a photocopy of some pages from “Silver Coinages of the Philadelphia Mint 1794-1916” by Walter Breen, and a print-out of EAC’s membership list with members’ addresses.

Folder 4: Correspondence with Jack Collins and Dane B. Nielsen, 1970-1977. Letters discuss the purchases of coins and numismatic literature, and EAC events.

Folder 5: Correspondence with Del Bland, 1969-1979. Letters discuss numismatic purchases and events. One letter forwarded from George M. Farnsworth provides some details about the Bust Half Nut Club.

Folder 6: Correspondence with Warren A. Lapp and William J. Parks, 1969-1974. Letters concern membership dues and the purchase of seven issues of “Penny-Wise”.

Folder 7: Miscellaneous correspondence, 1969-1980. Letters concern cleaning coins, numismatic events, coin exhibitions, photographing coins, coin lists, coin attributions and grading, and the printing of “Penny Whimsey”. Included are two membership cards and a membership certificate belonging to Meghrig, and a newspaper clipping from “Coin World”, October 30, 1974, about the indexing of “Penny-Wise”. Correspondents include Robinson S. Brown, Chuck Heck, Frank Stillinger, Jack Collins, Warren A. Lapp, Gregory Leo Germain, Edward R. Bush, Denis W. Loring, Herbert A. Silberman, Carl Windon, and William J. Parks.
