Biographical Note

The Flushing Coin Club was founded in 1964 by Gene DeFilippo after polling members of the American Numismatic Association and placing ads in papers and magazines. The club held its first meeting on February 14, 1964, to formally ratify the new constitution and bylaws. It was registered as a domestic not-for-profit corporation on December 5, 1967.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this collection consists of the Flushing Coin Club (FCC)’s administrative and promotional papers grouped by year. Their paperwork largely consists of exhibit topics, agendas, and minutes for the FCC’s monthly meetings; records for their coin auctions; and correspondence relating to club events. Two folders contain a retrospective album that documents the FCC’s formation and early years.

An envelope containing a letter dated May 12, 2018, from Peter Sugar to David Hill. Enclosed is the FCC membership card belonging to Gordon Frost, who had been an active member of the ANS but passed away before the FCC could deliver his membership card.

Folder 5: Flushing Album 1 of 2. A series of pages from a three-ring binder album with black cardboard backing and a wrap-around plastic overlay, arranged chronologically, covering the years 1964 and 1965 with one document from 1969. The pages contain typewritten documents dating from the FCC’s foundation including articles, the club’s signed bylaws (1969), member lists, poetry, news clippings, community notices, and ephemera. Includes a photograph of Gene DeFilippo and Steve Kaplin, October 1964, and a photograph of George Collins.

Folder 6: Flushing Album 2 of 2. More pages from the FCC’s album dating from 1965 to 1966. Documents include ephemera, news clippings, a list of the club’s circulating library, donation records, and club reports. Includes a photograph of the officers at the club’s second anniversary, February 11, 1966, and 17 photographs from the club’s Christmas party, December 10, 1966.
