Biographical Note

Coin collector Colonel George L. Hamilton (d. 1950) of Jamestown, Rhode Island, and Santa Barbara, California, became a member of the American Numismatic Society in 1916.

Scope and Content Note

Three notebooks containing an inventory of Hamilton’s collection of medals from countries throughout the world that were purchased between 1919 and 1940. The notebook pages were preprinted with the categories Country, Variety, Dated, Awarded, Description, Obverse, Reverse, Suspension, Designer, Bars, Ribbon-Colors, Ribbon-Disposition, Ribbon-Sizes, Inscription, Bought, and Remarks. Also includes three letters (1921-1922) from a writer whose signature is illegible, on the topic of Russian, Chinese, and Japanese war medals and Hamilton’s purchase of them. One of the letters mentions Hamilton’s war service.
