Material related to research, identification and documentation of the Purple Heart Badge of Military Merit of the Order of Military Merit given to Elijah Churchill. Contains two 1939 typewritten letters/correspondences between Harold E. Gillingham, A. W. Barnes, accompanied by 1854 manuscript facsimile document from the State of Connecticut, Office of the State Comptroller, along with color plate of the Purple Heart Badge of Military Merit, two typescripts, "Corrected description: The Purple Heart Badge of Military Merit," and manuscript facsimile of the Purple Heart Badge of Military Merit, "Presented to Elijah Churchill by George Washington for bravery shown during the capture of a Fort." Also included is the original envelope which material was sent to Sydney P. Noe, Secretary of the American Numismatic Society from the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of New Hampshire.
Material was folded and enclosed in envelope in the back of the book, "The Order of Military Merit : the Badge of Military Merit of the Continental Army" by William L. Willey. The book was donated to the ANS in 1925 by the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of New Hampshire.
