about the lecture

From its foundation in the early 3rd century AD until its conquest by the Muslim Arabs in the 7th century, the Sasanian Empire was one of the most powerful and well-organized states of the ancient world. Its coinage is one of the most important sources for its history, economics and art. This talk provides insight into Sasanian numismatics, especially in comparison with the Roman world, and also focuses on the research project "Sylloge Nummorum Sasanidarum".

Nikolaus Schindel has studied numismatics and ancient history at Vienna University. He is working at the Numismatic Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and is author of volume 3 of Sylloge Nummorum Sasanidarum Paris-Berlin-Vienna and SNS Israel (forthcoming)
