ANS Duplicates in Stack's Bowers Auction

Duplicate modern Chinese coins from the ANS collection have been consigned to the Stacks Bowers Ponterio Hong Kong Auction. Among the 100+ items to be sold are such 19th and 20th Century pieces as portrait dollars of Yuan Shih Kai (the main grouping of the consignment), Li Yuan Hung, Sun Yat Sen, Tuan Chi Jui and Tsao Kun. There are also a number of smaller-denomination Late Imperial and Early Republican silver pieces and a couple of desirable Yuan Shi Kai Republican gold pieces. The Stacks Bowers Ponterio Hong Kong Auction sale dates are April 2nd through 4th, 2012 at the Mira Hotel, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. A list of the ANS lots is available here. The Stack's Bowers Auction catalog is accessible online here.

The American Numismatic Society's Board of Trustees approved the sale of a group of duplicate modern Chinese coins from the collection of its East Asian Department in October of 2011. The ANS collection of Chinese coins is the largest in the Western World, and among its holdings of machine-struck issues have been found a selection of exact die duplicates, of which there are superior examples to be retained in the cabinet. Proceeds from the sale of these duplicates, estimated at $200,000, will go toward the Newell Coin Purchase Fund, restricted to acquisition of other items needed for the collection.

New ANS Exhibit Opening March 30th

A new ANS exhibit will open March 30th at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. "Signs of Inflation" will investigate the historical perspectives and concepts of inflation as revealed through coins and other objects. Items included will range from the Roman silver coins decreasing size, weight and metal quality during the 4th century AD to the 20th century, where numerous inflation situations occurred across international monitory systems, including the Weimar Republic and the Republic of Yugoslavia’s last years of existence. Visitors will be invited to travel through time and consider similar phenomena as well as challenge the commonly held view that the economy of today is inherently different from that of the past. The exhibit will encourage us to explore the concept of purchasing power through the different monetary mediums available to human societies since the creation of money as a value bearing object. Details here.
