Membership Renewal- American Journal of Numismatics

Please renew your membership dues for 2012. You can renew online or download a mail-in form on the Membership Page. American Journal of Numismatics vol. 23 (2011) is expected to ship in the next few weeks. If you have not yet renewed your 2011 dues, please be sure to do so promptly to be eligible to receive a copy (excludes Basic Associates and non-paying Corresponding members). The Society relies on your membership dues and contributions to improve upon programs and further our mission. Thank you for your continued membership.

Colonial Newsletter 148

The April issue of Colonial Newsletter is expected to mail next week. If you have not already renewed your CNL subscription, you can do so online or by calling (212) 571-4470 ext 117. The Colonial Newsletter is a research journal dedicated to the study of early American numismatics. Founded in 1960, CNL has continuously published some of the most scholarly and seminal studies in this area of numismatics. Focusing on the study of the coinages produced by the states during the Confederation period of the United States, CNL also investigates a variety of other specie that our forefathers used in their daily lives. Anyone with an interest in early America and its struggle to establish a new nation will find something of value in this publication.

Harry W. Fowler Memorial Lecture

On Thursday, April 19th, Katerini Liampi, Professor of Numismatics, University of Ioannina, Greece will present the Harry W. Fowler memorial Lecture on Coin Circulation in Epirus: Excavation Finds from the Byzantine Castle of Ioannina. 5:30pm Reception

ANS Lecture with Roger Bland

On Monday, April 23rd, Dr. Roger Bland Head of Portable Antiquities and Treasure at the British Museum will present a lecture entitled Coin hoards and hoarding in Britain: buried with the intention of recovery or votive deposits?.

ANS Staff members will attend the 2012 CICF. On Saturday April 28th from 6 to 8pm an ANS Reception, sponsored and hosted by ANS Trustee Mike Gasvoda will be open to ANS members and those interested in learning more about the ANS. Ute Wartenberg Kagan will be discussing the new ANS acquisition policy. Refreshments will be served. Heritage Lecture Series: Ancient Coinage

On Wednesday, May 9th, Heritage Auctions will host the second of a three part ANS/Heritage lecture series at their Beverly Hills, CA branch. ANS Curator Appointed to CCAC

The United States Mint announced the appointment of ANS Curator of North American Coins and Currency Robert Wilson Hoge to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC). Robert Hoge was appointed as a member specially qualified to serve by virtue of his education, training or experience in numismatic curation. The CCAC, established by an Act of Congress in 2003, advises the Secretary of the Treasury on theme or design proposals relating to circulating coinage, bullion coinage, Congressional Gold Medals and other medals produced by the United States Mint. The CCAC also makes commemorative coin recommendations to the Secretary and advises on the events, persons or places to be commemorated, as well as on the mintage levels and proposed designs. ANS at Archaeology Conference

ANS Web and Database Developer Ethan Gruber represented the ANS at the Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology conference hosted by the Archaeological Computing Research Group in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Southampton, UK on March 26th through 30th. Two papers were presented: "Linking Roman Coins: Current Work at the American Numismatic Society" by Andrew Meadows, Sebastian Heath, Gilles Bransbourg and Ethan Gruber; "Semantic Web Technologies Applied to Numismatic Collections" by Andrew Meadows, Sebastian Heath, David Wigg-Wolf (Deutsches Archaeologisches Institut),Karsten Tolle (University of Frankfurt) and Dan Pett (Portable Antiquities Scheme).
