2012 ANS Gala - Tickets Available

The American Numismatic Society Gala will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. We will be honoring Harlan J. Berk with the Trustees' Award and Frederic G. Withington with the Distinguished Service Award. We hope you can join us for cocktails and hors oeuvres, dinner, dancing, an illusionist, live and silent auctions, and much more.

Tickets are still available for purchase and we are currently looking for sponsors and auction donors. Preferred auction items include coins, medals, historical items, rare books, and artwork. ANS at NYINC

Please be sure to visit the ANS table in the Rotunda at the upcoming New York International Coin Convention at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, January 6 through 8, 2012. ANS at AIA

ANS Staff will attend the upcoming 2012 Arochaeological Institute of America/American Philological Association Joint Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, January 6 through 8. A joint ANS/Friends of Numismatics Meeting will be held during the weekend. Check our web calendar for updates.

2012 Stephen K. Scher Lecture

On Thursday, February 2, 2012 the ANS is pleased to hold the Stephen K. Scher Lecture with speaker Andrea Bayer, Associate Curator in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Dr. Bayer will present Exploring the Renaissance Portrait from Donatello to Bellini. 5:30pm Reception

2011 Huntington Medal Award

The ANS is pleased to announce Dr. Richard G. Doty as the recipeint of the 2011 Huntington Medal Award. The award is conferred annually in honor of the late Archer M. Huntington in recognition of outstanding career contributions to numismatic scholarship. Dr. Doty is Curator of the National Numismatic Collection at the National Museum of American History of the Smithsonian Institution.

The Huntington Medal Award Ceremony and Silvia Mani Hurter Memorial Lecture will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 5:30pm at ANS headquarters. Details here.

2012 E.P. Newman Graduate Seminar - Deadline Approaching

Applications for the 2012 Eric P. Newman Graduate Seminar in Numismatics are due no later than February 10, 2012. A limited number of stipends of up to $4000 are available to US and Canadian citizens, and non-US citizens studying at US institutions under J-1 visas. Newman Medal

Eric P. Newman, America’s foremost numismatist, collector, and scholar celebrated his 100th birthday on May 25, 2011. In his honor and in recognition of his numerous achievements, the American Numismatic Society commissioned Philadelphia artist Amy Kann to create a bas relief portrait of Mr. Newman. At his birthday celebration held in NYC, ANS Chairman of the Board, Kenneth L. Edlow, presented Mr. Newman with the framed relief portrait.

A two-sided limited edition medal will utilize the design of the original 7.75 x 9.875 inch bas relief portrait of Mr. Newman on the front. The reverse depicts Mr. Newman seated and reading at a desk. The Newman medal will be struck in both bronze and silver after the subscription closes on January 13, 2012. Cultural Change - Limited Edition Copies Still Available

Cultural Change: Jewish, Christian and Islamic Coins of the Holy Land is a full color catalogue of all the coins featured in the ANS’ acclaimed temporary exhibit of the same name. All coins are illustrated in full color, with explanatory text, illustrations of related material, maps and family-trees. The volume serves as the ideal introduction to the coinage of the Holy Land, as well as providing a history of the region from the 4th century BC to Crusader times, illustrated by the coinage that was produced there. As such, it contains some of the earliest Jewish coins, as well as the earliest to bear overtly Christian symbolism.

Cultural Change: Coins of the Holy Land from the Collection of Abraham and Marian Scheuer Sofaer is on view at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
