Biographical note
Bernard Morgenthau (1860?-1948) of Riverside Drive, New York City, was the author of Check List of U.S. Transportation Tokens (1944) and numerous articles on transit tokens used in various cities.

Contains correspondence (1940-1948) regarding Morgenthau’s efforts to obtain transportation tokens and information about them from various cities throughout the United States. Correspondents include bridge and tunnel authorities, chambers of commerce, libraries, local governments, and bus, ferry, and street railway companies. Clippings, articles, and other informational materials sent by the municipalities are included with the letters. Also includes a version of Morgenthau’s Check List of Transportation Tokens (1943), which is typed and contained in four loose-leaf notebooks. Two notebooks contain his Stories Behind the Tokens (1940), which details the history of public transportation of various cities and is illustrated with rubbings of tokens and cut and pasted clippings. It includes a photograph of Morgenthau taken in 1941. Another notebook contains his checklists that were published in numismatic magazines. Also present is a notebook containing Transportation Tokens, Tickets, Passes, and Badges of Great Britain & Ireland by Edward F. Herdman (1932) and Morgenthau’s copies of volume 1 of The Fare Box, A Monthly News-letter for Collectors of Transportation Tokens (1947-1948), along with correspondence with its editor, R.L. Moore. Other notebooks hold clippings and notes pertaining to transportation tokens. There are several photographic prints and negatives of a coin exhibit at the British Museum.
